Message from Mayor David Miller
When I stood for the first time as Mayor of this Council, I was buoyed by the great sense of optimism in our city and deeply honoured to be elected to this office. I knew that the people of Toronto wanted to feel connected to their city government and that this was the Council that would make a difference and accomplish change - together. In January 2004 over 1,100 members of the public participated in our first ever Listening to Toronto session. People told us that they wanted City Council to “spend for impact” - to make the difficult decisions required to balance the budget, find a focus for the coming three years and keep Torontonians informed and involved in the next steps. Councillors took these words to heart and for the first time in Toronto’s history developed and approved 9 priorities – issues they wanted to see action on in this term of City Council. In this report you will learn more about these priorities – why they are important, challenges we’ve faced, and the strides we’ve made in moving forward in all nine areas. A City’s work is not just about what we want to do, it’s also about what a modern city needs to provide its residents, businesses and visitors. Behind every one of City Council’s nine priorities, the core business of the city continues. In this report we’ve provided information, to give you a sense of all that goes on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to keep Toronto working.
I know that with your continued participation, this City Council will accomplish what it set out to do and keep Toronto great. |
